About this event

The sessions of Empowering Women, Public Space and Cimate Change Talks, combine our past topics of Public Space and Climate Change. Partnering together with Her City a joint initiative of UN Habitat and Global Utmaning. Partners of the New European Bauhaus and co-organization with partners of BIDs Belgium and City Space Architecture.

Empowering Women, Public Space and Climate Change aims to create further awareness, research and projects on female led initiatives and gathering experts from a variety of sectors with a focus on empowering diverse women around the world. Engaging in inspiring debates and discussions, taking an inclusive approach to highlight women working in the field.All sessions of Empowering Women and Climate Change recognize the need for more gender equality, racial and social justice. With taking an integrated systemic and connected approach by local governments, private sector and grassroots and civil society organizations, together having a crucial opportunity to enhance their climate responses from social issues to the supply chain, from poverty alleviation and gender equality.

About this session:

In this session, we ask our speakers share their experiences and how the New European Bauhaus values of ‘Inclusive, Sustainable and Beautiful’ are incorporated in their work and how this can leverage the importance of gender equality for more sustainable cities as an efficient tool for the fight against climate change.

Between the period of June 9th to 12th, the first New European Bauhaus Festival will be taking place around Europe. “The New European Bauhaus is a creative and interdisciplinary initiative that connects the European Green Deal to our living spaces and experiences.The New European Bauhaus initiative calls on all of us to imagine and build together a sustainable and inclusive future that is beautiful for our eyes, minds, and souls. Beautiful are the places, practices, and experiences that are:

• Enriching, inspired by art and culture, responding to needs beyond functionality.

• Sustainable, in harmony with nature, the environment, and our planet.

• Inclusive, encouraging a dialogue across cultures, disciplines, genders and ages.”

This session of Empowering Women and Public Spaces Talks, is co-organised by Rozina Spinnoy, BIDs Belgium and in partnership with Luisa Bravo of City Space Architecture. Partners of Her City, a joint initiative of UN Habitat and Global Utmaning, the New European Bauhaus (as community partners of BIDs Belgium).

LISA LANG

Lisa Lang is the Director for EU Affairs & Policy Orchestrator for EIT Climate KIC. Climate-KIC is a knowledge and innovation community established and funded by the EIT – European Institute of Innovation and Technology in 2010. Our purpose is to tackle climate change through innovation. We are Europe’s largest public-private partnership with this purpose – a growing pan-European community of diverse organisations united by a commitment to direct the power of creativity and human ingenuity at the climate change challenge. Lisa Lang has gained recognition as one of Forbes Europe’s Top 50 Women in Tech, and has been listed as one of the 50 most important women for innovation & startups in the EU.She founded highly recognized companies like ElektroCouture, ThePowerHouse and FNDMT who are dedicated to push innovation within the creative and innovative industry eco systems. Lisa Lang is a direct adviser for creative industries, digitalisation and entrepreneurship for the European Commission on several high-level advisory boards, including Pact for Skills, Industrial Forum and the US/EU Trade & Technology Council.Lisa Lang is on the advisory board to the Zurich university of arts as well as a policy advisor for Fashion Innovation Centre Sweden. She has been given guest lectures at TEDx Athens, KryptoLabs Abu Dhabi and Oxford University.

MADELEINE SPENCER

Madeleine Thérèse Spencer is a leader in placemaking, arts, education, community engagement, economic pipeline development and downtown management. She is the founder of Diamond Heart Enterprises, The Venus Foundation and Urban Alchemy. She is the co-founder of the Boca de Oro Festival, is an advisor for Santa Ana’s XQ Superschool – Circulos and sits on the executive board of Community Engagement. Since 2020 Spencer has been part of the Leadership Team of Placemaking US, a growing network where she is dedicated to modeling standards of diversity, equity & inclusion within the United States.

ELSAMARIE D’SILVA

ElsaMarie D’Silva (pronouns: she/her) is the Founder of Red Dot Foundation (India) and President of Red Dot Foundation Global (USA). Its technology platform Safecity, crowdsources personal experiences of sexual violence and abuse in public and private spaces globally. Since Safecity started in Dec 2012, it has become the largest crowd map on the issue in India and abroad. Prior to Safecity, she was in the aviation industry for 20 years where she worked with JetAirways and Kingfisher Airlines. Her last portfolio was Vice President Network Planning & Charters where she oversaw the planning and implementation of 500 daily flights.

DAISY NARAYANAN MBE FRSE (not present)

Daisy Narayanan is the Head of Placemaking and Mobility at the City of Edinburgh Council where she leads on delivering a city-wide integrated approach to transport and placemaking. She trained as an architect and urban designer and over the last decade, her work has focussed on sustainable transport and climate action. Daisy sits on the Board of Architecture and Design Scotland, Wellbeing Alliance Scotland and The Saltire Society. She is a member of the Evidence Group of Scotland’s Climate Assembly and sits on the judging panel for Scottish Transport Awards. She has recently been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.Drawing on her previous experience working in India, Singapore, England and Scotland, Daisy believes passionately in the importance of creating inclusive places for people: places that reflect and complement the communities that live in them. A music aficionado, a bookworm and a linguist, Daisy spends her time enjoying the Scottish outdoors with her husband and two children.

LUISA BRAVO

Luisa Bravo is a global academic scholar and educator, social entrepreneur and public space activist. She has more than 15-years experience in the professional field as urban planner and designer with a specific focus on public space. Her expertise is grounded in extensive academic postdoctoral research and teaching in Italy and Europe, the United States, Middle East, Asia and Australia. Throughout her academic career, she held different academic positions, in Italy and abroad, and she has been the recipient of prestigious grants and awards such as the Marco Polo scholarship for a postdoctoral research period as Visiting Scholar at IURD – Institute of Urban and Regional Development at University of California Berkeley (USA, 2012) and the Australia Award Endeavour Executive Fellowship for professional development, fully funded by the Australian Government, Department of Education and Training, hosted at the Queensland University of Technology, School of Design, Faculty of Creative Industries (Australia, 2018).

Luisa is the Founder and President of City Space Architecture, an Italian-based non-profit organization promoting public space culture at the global level, and she is the Founder and Editor in Chief of The Journal of Public Space, the first, interdisciplinary, academic, open access journal entirely dedicated to public space, that she established through City Space Architecture in partnership with UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme.

ROZINA SPINNOY

Rozina Spinnoy is a Design Strategist and Social Entrepreneur, Owner/Founder of her NGO BIDs Belgium and Design SME’s based in Brussels and working internationally. She is also the Co-Founder of the international/community initiative of Empowering Women and Public Space and also Co-Founder of Brussels based collective W100, which aims at building bridges with diverse women across the Brussels Region. An active member and Leader of the Placemaking Europe Network. Rozina is also an Academician for the Academy of Urbanism and also sitting on a variety of Advisory Councils.Rozina champions a variety of causes, projects and philanthropic activities, ranging from gender equality, urban place-making, inclusion and diversity. Through to advocating for more mental health awareness, inclusive communities and co-designing processes in her wide range of diverse projects. You will find Rozina often sharing her views and passion on the value of Design, Creativity and Foresight for positive impact across our society.
